Siudy Garrido is a distinguished second-generation flamenco artist, deeply inspired by her mother, Siudy Quintero. With a remarkable career spanning 60 years in flamenco, her mother has been honored with the "Lazo de Dama, Orden al Mérito Civil" medal by the King and Government of Spain, recognizing her exceptional contribution to the expansion of flamenco in Venezuela.
Following in her mother's footsteps, Siudy Garrido has emerged as a prominent figure in Hispanic dance in Latin America. She has taken her art across the United States, Latin America, and Canada, earning multiple accolades, including the National Dance Award with an honorable mention in her home country. Additionally, she was nominated for the prestigious Drama Desk Awards on Broadway as an outstanding choreographer in 2011 and has won the Dance Miami Choreographers Award for 2024-25.
In 2000, Siudy Garrido founded her own company, Siudy Dance Company, where she has choreographed six outstanding shows, inviting artists such as Antonio Canales, Farruquito, and Argentina to participate in her creations. She has also collaborated with pop and urban artists like Romeo Santos and Alejandro Sanz, and participated in several opera and orchestra collaborations, including LA PHIL, Pittsburgh Opera, The Miami Symphony Orchestra (MISO), and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra.
A notable milestone in her career is being the first flamenco "baile" artist to receive two Latin Grammy nominations for a personal project. She has revolutionized the world of flamenco, bringing her talent and creativity to significant entities such as Broadway, which premiered at Disney Epcot Center with 80 performances, to Bailaora (2021-present), each work reflects her unique vision, Cirque Du Soleil, Hollywood Bowl, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, popularizing this dance genre in renowned music videos and television programs of contemporary pop culture.
She debuted as a choreographer with Body and Soul, receiving an honorable mention at the Municipal Dance Award in her native country. In 2006, she collaborated with Cirque Du Soleil in Las Vegas, conducting an intensive course for their dancers. Her work gained recognition on Broadway, earning a Drama Desk Award nomination in 2011 for her Off-Broadway production Entre Mundos. She then toured extensively across the United States and Latin America, performing in renowned theaters such as Place des Arts in Montreal, the Teresa Carreño Theater in Caracas, and the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami.
In 2008, the urban flamenco fusion musical "Entre Mundos" was created. It had a successful tour in Venezuela and Miami, culminating in a 50-show run Off-Broadway. This performance earned her a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Choreography and continued its tour across the United States and Canada until 2014.
The production premiered its documentary "Siudy Between Worlds, 50 Performances of the American Dream," directed by Pablo Croce, at the Miami Film Festival in 2020. This documentary participated in over 20 film festivals, winning the Best Documentary award at the South Texas International Film Festival 2021 and the Soto award from the Venezuelan Film Academy in 2024.
In 2013, in collaboration with José Luis de la Páz, Garrido premiered and toured with a flamenco suite titled Flamenco Intimo, which remains in her repertoire and continues to evolve.
In 2015, Garrido relocated her company to Miami, Florida, due to
socio-political challenges in Venezuela. Starting from scratch as an
immigrant, She was soon entrusted by the LOS Angeles Philharmonic with the
choreography and artistic direction of Manuel de Falla•s Amor Brujo as part
Of the Falla, flamenco, and Dudamel concert in 2015.
This collaboration with maestro Gustavo Dudamel resulted in four sold-out
performances at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and was later re-staged at
the Hollywood Bowl in 2019.
In 2019, Garrido was featured on World of Dance on NBC, In this sorne year, Siudy showcased Bailaora—Within Mer Within You, which premiered after the pandemic in 2021. This production commissioned original music by Juan parrilla and Manuel Fernandez and the award-winning feature documentary titled Bailaora, Mis pies son mi voz, earning her two Latin Grammy nominations in 2022
In 2021, Siudy invited dancer José Manuel Álvarez for a collaboration performance titled Gala Flamenca
and continued touring with Bailaora, now titled after its documentary, Bailaora— Mis Pies Son Mi Voz.
Recently, Garrido revamped Amor Brujo at the Adrienne Arsht Center, incorporating new music by maestro
José Luis de la Páz, and opened the
62nd Bursa Arts Festival in Turkey with the Istanbul Regional Orchestra conducted by Naci Ózgúç. Beyond
Stage productions, Garrido has
collaborated with renowned artists such as Alejandro Sanz and Romeo Santos in live concerts and has been
featured in music videos with Marc Anthony and Maná. Her work with institutions like LA PHIL, Disney,
and Cirque du Soleil further
highlights her versatility. Garrido has also performed at prestigious events such as the palma de
Mallorca "Play for Good" Philanthropic gala, Latin Grammy Academy•s person of the Year gala honoring
Alejandro Sanz, and Univision's I hour TV special "Ellas".
In recognition of her innovation in dance, Siudy Garrido was awarded the Dance Miami Choreographers Award 2024-25. This award highlights her creativity and the influence of her choreography in the world of flamenco.
